Brescou Fort, with its extremely ancient fortifications, sits off the coast at Cap d'Agde, on the only volcanic island in the Golfe du Lion. However, the existing fort was designed by Vauban and built in the 17th century, later becoming a National prison (from the 18th C to the beginning of the 19th C). You can visit the fort any day in summer, taking a boat from Cap d’Agde or Grau d’Agde.
Cap d’Agde, a shipping crossroads, also has its share of carefully kept secrets and an enthralling heritage. The Canal du Midi winds its way through the country, seeking out signs of its great past, such as the round lock at Agde, while exploring the Languedoc lifestyle and landscapes.
